International Tea Day
May 21, 2024 | Other Activities
Tea is a drink that comes from the leaves of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). Tea is known to originate from China, where tea leaves have been consumed for thousands of years because they have a variety of benefits from health to culture. Over the centuries, tea spread to various parts of the world through trade and colonization. This makes tea a very popular drink in many countries around the world.
The history of International Tea Day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UN) through the FAO Committee on Commodity Problems (CCP) in 2019 which was then officially commemorated on May 21 2020. The commemoration on this date was chosen because it was the beginning tea production season in the majority of countries.
Tea was first introduced to Indonesia by the Dutch colonial government in the 18th century. Indonesia is currently one of the largest tea producers in the world with Java and Sumatra as the main centers. In the Batang Regency area, tea will become one of the dominant commodities in 2023 with production of 1,424.44 tons according to Central Java Province in Figures 2023.
International Tea Day provides an opportunity for tea lovers around the world to celebrate the diversity and beauty of this drink, as well as to increase understanding of its important role in various aspects of life, especially the economy and health.
