The reform movement began with the economic crisis that occurred in 1998. This sparked student demonstrations demanding the elimination of Corruption, Collusion, and Nepotism (KKN) in the government and demanding the resignation of President Soeharto who had served for 32 years. This movement reached its peak when President Soeharto announced his resignation from the presidency on May 21, 1998, so that today is commemorated as National Reform Day
