Fasting is not just about refraining from eating and drinking. However, fasting actually also trains patience, guarding your tongue, and staying away from things that can reduce the value of worship. Rasulullah ﷺ said:

"How many people fast, but don't get anything from their fast except hunger and thirst. And how many people pray at night, but don't get anything from their night prayers except staying up late." (HR. Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and al-Hakim)

It's a shame if we fast but it's not worth the reward. One of the actions that can damage the rewards of fasting is gossiping or what we often call backbiting. As Rasulullah SAW said: "Fasting is a shield as long as the person who fasts does not damage it." Friends ask, what does a person break his fast with? He answered, "with lies or backbiting" (HR. Tabrani).

The words of Rasulullah SAW above remind us that maintaining our speech and behavior during fasting is very important. Don't let the practices we carry out throughout the day be in vain just because of useless words. Let's use fasting as a means to educate ourselves, restrain our desires, and improve our morals so that our worship is truly valuable in the sight of Allah SWT. Barakallahufiikum.
